 2015 Two Chics and A Workshop

Revitalizing Readers Workshop Grades 2-6 (Beyond Workshop 101) July 11-12, 2018

Morton Ranch Elementary

2502 N Mason Rd,

Katy, TX 77449

This TWO day workshop is an in depth look at raising the rigor of your Readers' Workshop. This is designed for teachers that have already had basic training in reading workshop and understand the structures.   We will be teaching ways to strengthen and breathe new life across across each component of the reading workshop. Engagement is the key for teaching to stick.

This workshop will look at ways to:

  • strengthen student engagement during workshop minilesson:

    • defining and understanding how to put "legs" on a strategy;

    • developing strong anchor charts that support the strategy beyond the lesson;

  • strengthen student engagement during independent reading:

    • BOOK BAGS: tackling the management and consistency of just right books in their hands;

    • READING LOGS: looking at reading logs as tool for goal setting;

    • The MID WORKSHOP teach - understanding that there is a second teaching opportunity;

    • PARTNERSHIPS: how to match and support partnerships in conferences as well as opportunities to teach again in the SHARE;

    • Those darn POST IT NOTES:  How can I help kids know WHAT to jot and WHEN to jot it? We will dig into this in particular with readers reading at levels J and above;

    • Using READ ALOUD to assess comprehension (to help the big question of, "How can I take a grade?”).

  •

    It is our hope to give you a renewed vigor for workshop and to strengthen your understanding of ways to use the workshop approach to its maximum potential in order to raise student engagement. We are looking forward to sharing new refreshing ideas and revisiting a few important structures to help you tighten up the workshop component  in your classroom.

    Last summer we had so much fun building playbooks with y'all! Let's do it again for anyone who missed out!  This ONE DAY workshop (repeat of June offering) is devoted to strategies we can use in reading workshop.  We will teach you the thinking we go through when designing a strategy to support teaching as well as how to design icons to support the strategy in a visual way for learners.  We will show you how to divide the playbook into clean categories to make it easy for you to navigate.  We will spend the day filling your notebook with specific strategies that you can use to support readers in conferences as well as small group instruction.  We will show you great resources to help support your work across the year.  This playbook will be a strong resource to support not only small group teaching, but give you clear anchor chart ideas for large group teaching as well.

    ****We highly encourage you to bring Jennifer Serravallo's Reading Strategies book as one resource to help you in the work.  We will have copies on hand for you to buy if you do not already own this.
