Comprehension is one of the 5 pillars of The Science of Reading. Teachers will receive support in the structures found in a work of fiction AND strategies that can be explicitly used to help readers gain access to deeper meaning inside those texts. This one day workshop will clarify how skills and strategies are different and address Texas standards specific to FICTION. Skills we will explore include:
-
Monitoring Meaning: setting purpose for reading and maintaining strong connection to the text throughout reading
-
Plot structure: identifying elements, sequence structures of retelling/summary
-
Setting vs Scene: understanding nuances of setting and its impact on story and characters (Visualizing setting and its movement is CRITICAL to accumulating storylines!)
-
Characters: developing deeper ideas about feelings and traits with more precise language, motives of characters, changes and impact from relationships
-
Theme/Author’s Message

Teachers will NOT ONLY leave with a clear understanding of these topics but construct a PLAYBOOK with clear anchor charts to support strategy instruction. The playbook can be supportive in large group, small group and reading conferences.
ALL REGISTRATIONS MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO THE WORKSHOP.
This workshop qualifies for Title 1 funding.
Make checks payable to Koesel Consulting.
Cancellation Policy: Substitutions are allowed at any time; however, refunds are not given.

All workshops begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m.
Plan to arrive between 8:10 and 8:20 to sign in, pick up materials, and find seating. If you are expecting a large group from your school, it is a good idea to come early if sitting together is important to you. Dress comfortably and you may want to add layers...buildings can be really cold.
