Comprehension is one of the 5 pillars of The Science of

Reading. Teachers need to not only understand the structures

found in expository texts, but also strategies that can be e

xplicitly taught to help readers gain access to deeper meaning

inside those texts. This TWO DAY workshop will dig deeply into strategies to support the following skills that align with Texas standards.

  • Monitoring Meaning: Monitoring Meaning: setting purpose for reading  and maintaining strong connection to the text throughout reading

  • Central/Main Idea: understanding these ideas and how to collect key details and synthesize them into one cohesive understanding

  • Key Details: determining importance across a text for important details that connect to the topic at hand

  • Vocabulary/Figurative Language: bringing meaning to confusing words or phrases

  • Theme: recognizing themes and supporting with text evidence

  • Text Features: what they are AND how we use them to enhance our understanding of the text and an authors point of view

Teachers will leave not only with a clear understanding of these topics but a playbook with clear anchor charts to support strategy instruction in these areas.

ALL REGISTRATIONS MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO THE WORKSHOP.
